Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called for Senator Ned Nwoko to be held accountable over allegations of child abuse, sexual misconduct, and abuse of power.
Sowore’s demand follows a viral social media post by Nwoko’s wife, Regina Daniels, in which she claimed she was only 17 years old when she married the Delta North senator. The revelation has sparked widespread public outrage and calls for investigation into the lawmaker’s conduct.
In a statement shared on his official social media handles, Sowore noted that under UK law, where Nwoko is a registered legal practitioner, any sexual relationship involving a minor constitutes statutory rape.
“This case goes beyond politics; it points to serious criminal conduct and gross abuse of power,” Sowore stated.
He further cited Daniels’ allegations that the senator introduced her to hard drugs while she was underage and allegedly forced himself upon her multiple times — acts he described as “grave offences that warrant urgent investigation and prosecution.”
Sowore also urged the Law Society of England and Wales and the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to initiate disciplinary proceedings before the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) to determine Nwoko’s fitness to continue practising law in the United Kingdom.
“It is unacceptable for Ned Nwoko to continue practising law in the UK while facing these damning allegations,” Sowore said.
The activist cautioned against any attempt by the senator to use his political connections or financial influence to obstruct justice, warning that “impunity has an expiry date.”
“We will not allow Ned Nwoko to continue using the now disgraced Nigeria Police Force, his political influence, or illicit wealth to suppress victims, pervert justice, and trample on human rights in Nigeria or anywhere else in the world,” he declared.
Sowore’s remarks have intensified public scrutiny and renewed calls for Nigerian and UK authorities to open investigations into the allegations. The controversy has also reignited debate over child protection laws, power dynamics in relationships, and accountability among public officials.
As of press time, Senator Nwoko had yet to issue a direct response to Sowore’s statement. However, earlier on Monday, he dismissed similar allegations as part of a “coordinated smear campaign” orchestrated by political enemies using his wife’s “health condition” to damage his reputation.
