Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Thursday toured several Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, ahead of the forthcoming Area Councils’ elections, engaging directly with residents and grassroots communities.
Obi disclosed the visits in a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he said the exercise was part of his commitment to people-centred leadership and inclusive development. He emphasised that leadership must be accessible and rooted in the lived realities of the people.
According to him, “leadership is not a distant concept but forged through presence, endurance, and authentic connection,” adding that true leadership must always be grounded in the needs and aspirations of citizens.
The former Anambra State governor said his engagements began at the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), from where he proceeded to different parts of the FCT to support candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) contesting the chairmanship elections.
“I made my first stop at the Abaji Area Council, where I campaigned alongside Dr Mohammed Ibrahim, the ADC chairmanship candidate for the area. I took a decisive one-hour walk through the community, listening intently to their voices, understanding their aspirations, and reinforcing my conviction,” Obi stated.
He said he later moved to the Kwali Area Council to support Jeremiah Badoji, the ADC chairmanship candidate, where he again spent time walking through the community and interacting with residents.
Obi further disclosed that he proceeded to Zuba in Gwagwalada Area Council, where he campaigned for Pharmacist Iko Danjuma, the ADC chairmanship candidate for the area. He also visited the busy Dei-Dei Market, engaging traders and residents while canvassing support for Dr Moses Paul, the ADC chairmanship candidate for AMAC.
Reaffirming his political philosophy, Obi stressed his commitment to inclusive development that reaches every sector of society, noting that meaningful governance begins with listening to the people.
He added that the grassroots engagements reinforced his belief that sustainable development and effective leadership can only be achieved through constant interaction with citizens and responsiveness to their needs.
