A fresh rift has widened within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party after Nyesom Wike accused senior party figures of fraud and political deception during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
Wike named former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, Seyi Makinde and former minister Tanimu Turaki, alleging that some leaders were attempting to create what he described as illegitimate party structures while disregarding existing court rulings. He argued that the moves amounted to political fraud and questioned the credibility of those driving the latest internal arrangements.
The latest confrontation comes amid a widening leadership battle inside the PDP following recent disputes over control of the party’s national structure. Rival camps have disagreed over the legitimacy of meetings, caretaker arrangements and the interpretation of court decisions, deepening uncertainty over who currently holds recognised authority within the party.
Wike also challenged party leaders to account for internal financial matters, including funds he said should be publicly explained. His remarks add fresh pressure to an already fragile opposition party as political actors begin positioning ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
Analysts say the dispute highlights how unresolved legal and political battles inside the PDP could further complicate efforts to rebuild cohesion before the next general election.
