The 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi has replied to recent comments of Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, regarding visiting the state without prior notice for security purposes.
Obi during his visit to Christ the King College, Onitsha said he is not afraid to visit any state in Nigeria.
Recall that Governor Okpebholo had said that asking Mr Obi to notify him before visiting the state was not a threat but an advisory.
“What I said was not a threat. It was advice for his own good. As Chief Security Officer, I’m responsible for the safety of everyone in Edo, including visitors,” he added.
Citing a past security incident, Governor Okpebholo said, “I lost a security detail during Obaseki’s tenure after being attacked at Benin Airport. That is why I issued that advisory. If Mr Obi chooses not to take it, that’s his decision.”
On his part, Obi said “I am not afraid of visiting any state in Nigeria, particularly when the purpose is to support causes that contribute to nation building such as education, health, and poverty alleviation.”
He explained that his visit to Benin, which he would repeat if need be, was solely to support the development of healthcare services.
Obi, however, expressed disappointment that such an act was politicised, pointing out that he went to Benin for the good of the people.
“If they have good doctors and nurses, life will be better for them. What I expect the governor to do is to complement efforts aimed at improving society,” he added.
