The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State has declared that former governors Rotimi Amaechi and Celestine Omehia will be “retired” from active politics after the 2027 general elections.
The declaration was made by the Director-General of the Ikwerre APC Campaign Organisation, Obinna Ekem, during the grand finale of the party’s rally at Omagwa community on Sunday, ahead of the August 30 local government election in the state.
Ekem expressed confidence that the APC would secure victory across all 13 wards of Ikwerre in the council polls, citing assurances from residents. He added that the local chapter was already preparing for the 2027 elections, pledging overwhelming support for President Bola Tinubu despite the alliance between Amaechi and Omehia.
He accused Amaechi of leading the APC in Rivers State into repeated electoral defeats during his tenure as the party leader, adding that his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) had brightened the APC’s chances.
“President Tinubu should focus his energy on national rivals like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark. As for Amaechi and Omehia, we will handle them here in Ikwerre,” Ekem declared.
Also speaking, the Rivers State APC Chairman recognized by the party’s national secretariat, Tony Okocha, called on residents of Ikwerre not to allow any single political party to dominate the forthcoming local government polls.
Okocha assured that the August 30 election would be more credible than the October 2024 exercise conducted under suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which was later nullified by the Supreme Court.
