Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has said former President Goodluck Jonathan remains the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) best hope for reclaiming power in the 2027 presidential election, urging the party to make deliberate efforts to bring him back into its fold.
Speaking on Friday, Lamido said Jonathan’s leadership experience, governance record, and collaborative approach make him unmatched within the party’s southern ranks.
“I think for PDP now, they should try and woo him; he is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him,” Lamido said.
He added, “If we are giving the presidency to the South, who is there in the PDP now that can challenge Jonathan in terms of being in office, being full-headed, being willing to listen, and being a key player who believes in partnership?”
Lamido’s comments come amid persistent speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to the PDP to seek the presidency in 2027.
Although the party has publicly denied offering him its ticket or actively wooing him, political insiders say behind-the-scenes moves are underway to position the former president as a strong challenger to President Bola Tinubu.
Jonathan, who has maintained a low political profile since losing the 2015 election, has yet to declare any intention to run. However, reports of quiet negotiations and lobbying have made him one of the most closely watched figures ahead of the next general election.
