Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for Nigeria to adopt a single five-year term for its presidents, similar to the system in South Korea.
Obi said the change would ensure that any occupant of the office focuses on delivering results within the limited time available, rather than spending part of their tenure preparing for re-election.
“If I have the opportunity, we should stop having a second tenure for presidents. It should be five years,” Obi said on Friday during a visit to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, at the Government House in Bauchi.
“That is what is in South Korea, so people come in and know that they have a job to do,” he added.
He criticised the current trend in Nigerian politics, where leaders spend one year in office and then devote the remaining years to campaigning for a second term.
“What people do now is to be president for one year and use the rest of the year thinking about the next tenure. Let’s stop it, let’s face the real job,” Obi said.
