Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has reaffirmed her strong support for Labour Party presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, describing him as a selfless and accountable leader who stands out in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Adichie, a vocal supporter of Obi during the 2023 presidential election, said her backing is based on her belief in his sincerity, humility, and deep commitment to national development—not personal ambition.
“Peter Obi doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he genuinely cares about Nigeria,” Adichie said. “That’s a crucial distinction. Many others are desperate for power, not out of patriotism, but because of their egos.”
The award-winning writer emphasized that her support for Obi is rooted in a deep love for Nigeria and a firm belief that the country can thrive with the right kind of leadership.
“Peter Obi doesn’t expect praise for doing what he sees as his duty. He sees leadership as a responsibility, not a privilege,” she added. “He is someone who understands that he’s accountable to the people, not above them.”
Adichie reflected on her long-standing relationship with Obi, describing him as “one of the simplest men I’ve ever known.” According to her, the values he held 15 years ago remain intact today. “He is genuine, consistent, and curious—qualities I believe every true leader should possess.”
On the question of Obi’s 2027 presidential ambition, Adichie remained cautious, saying, “I don’t want to speak on how I’d feel if he’s not a candidate. I prefer not to think about that yet. We’ll wait and see what happens.”
Adichie played a visible role in Obi’s 2023 campaign, endorsing him through social media, a heartfelt birthday tribute, and a campaign video. After the election, where Obi placed third behind President Bola Tinubu, she penned an open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden, questioning the credibility of the electoral process. Her appearance at the Presidential Election Tribunal in Abuja further underscored her support.
With Obi already signaling his intent to contest the 2027 election, Adichie’s continued endorsement signals growing anticipation around his next political move.
