Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has said she would strongly oppose former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, if he reneges on his promise to serve only one term in office.
Yesufu made the statement during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, stressing that Obi must remain consistent with his long-standing commitment to a single-term presidency.
“If Mr. Peter Obi gets into office and decides to do more than one term, I will oppose him with everything in me,” she said.
She noted that Obi’s position on serving just one term predates the 2023 general election, adding that it has been a key part of his message to supporters.
According to Yesufu, she personally sought clarification from the former Anambra State governor after the election to confirm his stance.
“After the 2023 election, I sat down with him and asked if he was truly committed to just one term,” she said.
She disclosed that Obi reaffirmed his promise during the conversation, insisting that he stands by his word.
“He told me he meant it and that his integrity is not something he jokes with,” she added.
Yesufu maintained that any attempt by Obi to seek a second term would be resisted, emphasizing the importance of accountability in leadership.
“He gave his word. He cannot come back and say otherwise. We will fight him there,” she said.
Despite her firm position, the activist expressed confidence that Obi would honour his pledge, describing him as a leader who keeps his word.
Her remarks have sparked renewed discussions around political promises and accountability, particularly as conversations about Nigeria’s future leadership continue to evolve.
