The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a strong warning ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that political office holders must be ready to “show their report cards” or risk losing public support.
Wike made the remarks during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elective National Convention, which he described as the “real convention” being observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Wike Declares PDP Convention Legitimate
Addressing party members and delegates, the former Rivers State governor insisted that the gathering represents the authentic structure of the PDP amid ongoing internal disputes.
He commended members for their resilience, noting that their commitment reflects continued belief in the PDP as a vehicle for national development.
“The path to the future of this party will be paved with sacrifice,” Wike said, adding that leadership must be selfless to achieve meaningful progress.
Attack on Defectors and Opposition Figures
In a strongly worded statement, Wike criticized politicians who defected from the PDP, accusing them of lacking leadership capacity.
He also took a swipe at a former Labour Party presidential candidate, alleging that such leaders benefited from the PDP platform but abandoned the party during difficult times.
“Those who used our platform and ran away when crisis came lack leadership,” he said.
Wike further warned that defectors who secured mandates under the PDP would face consequences.
“All those who took the mandate of the PDP and defected will be dealt with, and the mandate will be taken back,” he added.
Concerns Over Leadership and Loyalty
The FCT Minister also questioned the resilience of some political leaders, suggesting that certain governors may not withstand national pressure during times of crisis.
According to him, leadership requires courage, sacrifice, and the ability to stand firm in the face of challenges.
2027 Elections: ‘Operation Show Your Report Card’
Looking ahead, Wike emphasized that performance would be the deciding factor in the next general elections.
While acknowledging that President Bola Tinubu has recorded achievements, he warned that voters would demand accountability from all elected officials.
“2027 elections will be operation show your report card. If you have nothing to show, the President will not cover you,” Wike stated.
Call for Unity Within PDP
Despite his criticism, Wike called on aggrieved party members to return and support efforts to rebuild and reposition the PDP.
He urged unity, emphasizing the need for renewal, regeneration, and reorganisation to strengthen the party ahead of future political contests.
Convention Participation
The convention recorded a significant turnout, with 2,415 delegates accredited out of the 2,527 expected, signaling strong participation despite internal divisions.
